Inadequacy of medical or dental facilities locally
266. - (1) When an officer or a member of his family is stationed in a place where it is not possible to obtain adequate medical or dental treatment and it is apparent that such officer or member of his family stands in need of such treatment, the officer or member of his family may be permitted to proceed to the nearest place at which necessary treatment is available:

Provided that an officer or a member of his family stationed in a place to which a Government medical assistant has been appointed may not avail himself of the provisions of this General Order without his first having consulted such medical assistant and obtained a certificate from him that, in his opinion, it is necessary for the officer or member of his family to proceed to an alternative specified place for urgent medical or dental treatment. This proviso may be dispensed with only in cases of apparent emergency when the medical assistant is not immediately available for consultation.

(2) Notwithstanding paragraph (1), if the medical or dental treatment required is not available at a Government hospital in Sarawak, the State Director of Health may recommend for the approval of the State Secretary to send the officer or a member of his family for medical or dental treatment in Kuala Lumpur or any other place within Malaysia.

(3) An officer or a member of his family who avails himself of the provisions of paragraph (1) or (2), shall be eligible for the allowances and passage provided for in General Orders 62 and 67.

(4) Where the State Director of Health or a Government medical specialist certifies that, in his opinion, it is necessary for medical reasons, that the officer or a member of his family proceeding for medical or dental treatment under paragraphs (1) and (2) should be accompanied by a member of his family, or by another person, where appropriate, that member of the officer’s family or such other person, shall be eligible for a return passage and accommodation at Government expense of the grade to which the officer himself is entitled, and for subsistence allowance at half the rate of his eligibility.
